Quentin Fletcher, Marquis of Devon, has a reputation with the ladies, wins at cards, and
has the best horseflesh around. Unfortunately, he can be a little smug about it. After he
played a game of whist with his friend John Willoughby and Lord Alton and won, the
young lord is disgruntled. Lord Alton decides Quentin is in dire need of a come down.
He convinces John to help him set up a harmless prank to bring him down a notch or
two.
Justine Riggs was raised by her father, a man who was very much disappointed that
she was not a boy. He did his best to raise his motherless daughter. He taught her many
things that were not proper for a young girl; such as archery, riding horses astride, and
much more. When her distant cousin sought her out in the country to help him win a
horse race she was intrigued.
A horse race was to be Quentin's comeuppance, to be humiliated when he lost the race
to a woman. Justine and Quentin are neck to neck when she sees a runaway carriage
running straight for disaster. Justine forfeits the race and risks her life to stop the
carriage. The owner of the carriage is Prudence Baldwin and she decides to show her
gratitude by helping Justine find a husband. She is sure that a husband's firm rein would
curb Justine's hoydenish pranks.
Ms. Toombs creates a fun romp following the escapades of Justine and Quentin. The
characters come to life as poor Mrs. Baldwin tries to teach Justine how to snare her
man using her feminine wiles. I loved the strong yet vulnerable Justine. Ms. Toombs
keeps you turning the pages until the end to see if the lovable characters can find their
way to each other.
