Box 101, Columbus, Mississippi 39703 Paperback $8.95 232 Pages Contemporary Romance Rating: Mignon Du Plessis is the slave of Charles Rabelais on the island of Martinique. After having raised their two children to the tender ages of seven and eleven, he sells them off so there is no one vying for her affections. In his quest to own her body, heart and soul, forever; he offers her the ultimate gift, eternal life. In her grief at the loss of her children and thinking her consent would some how return her children to her, she agrees. Instead, he unwittingly gives her the tools with which to escape his control and guarantees his being hunted for over seven hundred years. Will Mignon’s rage ever dissipate, or will it fuel her revenge? Detective Ryan Lattimore has been staking out New Orleans’s morgue in hopes of solving the mystery of the beheaded corpses. While inside the morgue a woman materializes right before his eyes. He thinks she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and he is unable to speak until the corpses begin to move. Instantly she responds by producing a medieval double headed ax and proceeds to behead them in a ballet of skill and death. The last one sees Ryan and proceeds to wrestle with him displaying an amazing amount of strength. This corpse was lying inert and certified as dead just a couple of hours ago. When Mignon comes to Ryan’s aid and swiftly chops off the head of this last corpse, Ryan finally finds his voice. In an awe filled voice he asks her name and instantly falls in love, or at least lust. Who is she? Or better yet, what is she? Mignon and Ryan take their first tentative steps toward attraction and a respect for each others skills. She knows she can never get involved with a mortal, and he has no clue of her true nature until too many lucky hunches add up to her being a vampire. When Ryan needs Mignon’s help in finding a pedophile with a kidnapped child, he begrudgingly admits her nature is more human than most. Soon it does not matter to him any longer, his love is stronger than any axe-welding vampire babe. Will they ever acknowledge their love for each other, and what will it cost them if they consummate it? J.M. Jeffries has written a tight, exciting novel, full of mysterious figures with the wisdom of thousands of years; but with the baby smooth skin of the young and fit. This reviewer loves the way the story flips between time periods, explaining the heroines past in glimpses of memories. The pacing is smooth and gentle unraveling the various characters' motivations explaining their appearance. I loved this book. Katherine L.
