Rhyden Fabhcun is a gaeilge elf and ambassador from Cneas to the Torachan overseas empire, and as such is a member of the council of Comhar. Through dreams, he is compelled by his queen Quynh to come to Iarnrod because “It” has been awakened. What is “It” and why the urgency? Without delay, Rhyden travels to Belgaeran, city of his birth.

Faevir Mcleod dreams of a golden chest that he opens to discover a golden stone that whispers “He is Chosen.” Being a gambler by trade, he is enticed by the visions of the stone. With his fair young friend Eisean Fabhmeir and cousin Fabhiros, they are known as the Highway Men, and set out to rob attendees of the Samhradh in Belgaeran.

As the ten members of the Second Council of the Comhar convene in Belgaeran, it is announced that the Shadow stone has been found and consequently stolen. Having heard of the their reputation, it is thought they, in league with Lahnduren are in possession of the stone. The council’s greatest fear is that Lahnduren will come into possession of the book of shadows too, giving him unimaginable power.

Ms. Sara Reinke has written a complex fantasy full of characters with noble intent, and an evil that corrupts all who hear its siren song. I was enthralled with the story and the evolving love between the minor characters. The multifaceted plot twists make it difficult to guess the conclusion, making it intriguing and gripping. It left me looking forward to the next book in the series with baited breath.
