Detective Inspector Tom Thorne has not worked undercover on the streets of London for six months, since trying to catch the man who kicked three homeless people to death. Now he must locate a missing boy.
Detective Inspector Louise Porter is Tom’s contact with the Kidnap Unit. She believes it strange how someone would actually kidnap a sixteen-year-old. She works tirelessly, with Tom, for answers.
When sixteen-year-old Luke Mullen turns up missing, Tom wonders why the parents wait a couple days to report the incident. When he learns Luke’s father is none other than Tony Mullen, a former police-officer, he realizes this task will not be easy. He joins forces with Detective Louise Porter, who believes, after careful cross-examination of the facts, things do not appear as they seem. It is believed Luke has been kidnapped. They pray he is still alive. Tom understands about loss. Orders strongly insist Tom pull all forces to locate Luke. There are hints that perhaps Luke’s father had initiated some enemies in his years. Would he purposely hold evidence if he had been threatened, or is it just a ploy to catch the real kidnapper? In no time Tom and Louise are consumed with many secrets as they rush to unravel the case.
Buried is one compelling read that keeps the reader in suspense until the matters are resolved. I like the way the chapters are broken up as the story unfolds. I could almost feel the turn of the knife that sweeps through the pages. I believe that Tom and Louise work well together. I could share in the pain that Tom feels when he is thinking on his own life and his father. He is a good man who takes his job seriously and thrusts his heart into the matter of events. Mark Billingham has crafted a well-written story that spins a fast-paced action read. I love the characters, as well as the secondary ones. With thrills, adrenaline rushes, and a unique storyline, this is an exhilarating read.
