Alice Carstairs could not be in a worse situation. Living with her cousin, and being the governess for her daughter, she is faced with another mouth to feed when her recently widowed cousin has another child. She struggles to keep everyone fed and warm, just barely scraping by with pure luck.
Captain Edward Masterman has been at sea since he was twelve. Now he finds himself landlocked with a title. He is not pleased by the development and to make matters worse, his frigate has been decommissioned. What he expects to find at The Priory is not what greets him.
Alice thinks of Sir Edward as her very own Sir Galahad, however she is frightened by his obvious dislike of her on their first meeting. He soon finds out from the butler, that after his brother's death, it was Alice that kept them all alive over the winter. Over the trials and tribulations that his sister-in-law induces, Alice being thrown in jail, and the fact that he has not received another commission, he throws himself into the life of running a farm and being a Lord. What he did not expect was to find love.
A light hearted historical written very cleverly by Ms. Milburn. This story deserves praise for being warm, loving and showing a side to a Captain that is just getting his land legs, not often seen. Alice is so patient at times that you wonder if you should be yelling the words for her in frustration. With the supporting characters the story keeps a fast, but not dizzying pace. The realization that Edward and Alice are meant for each other grows throughout the story and does not disappoint. This is one story that I will recommend to friends.
