Ravine Patton had vowed to move from her rural roots in Noxen, Pennsylvania and had succeeded in achieving that goal by becoming an attorney in Philadelphia. So why did she feel like she had taken a step backward when she returned home to have her son, Brady? She had met Brady’s father in Texas while stranded on a back road and had had a one-night stand with the motorcycle ridin’ bandido who had saved her from the sweltering heat. Shamed at being a single mother and running out of savings fast, she had taken up residence in her grandfather’s old homestead. Receiving a diaper genie for the noxious baby deposits, she never imagined a real genie would change her life and her heart.

Captain Eugene Hugh O’Neill is an Aussie Flyer who had crashed in the African desert following Rommel in Word War II. Having been rescued by Bedouins and taken to an oasis, he had sought to return to his regiment but the king of the oasis had found him trying to escape with one of his many wives. Convinced by that same wife to spare his life, the king had had the caliph turn him into a Jinni and he had been encapsulated in his bottle for over sixty years until the day Ravine had removed the stopper. Trying to inform her of her right to three wishes turned into a battle of wills with Ravine convinced of her insanity and the impossibility of his existence. Will he ever be able to return to his old life or will he forever be at her whim?

Ravine, testing Gene the genie’s claims, asks for simple things and after receiving them, starts to believe him. Gene starts to get acclimated to the twenty-first century with all of its advances but still wonders about the fate of his family and friends. He also starts to admire and desire the spitfire with the iron will, proclaiming his hearts desire easily while caring for her son. Ravine, feeling the attraction and denying its existence convinces herself of the improbability of a relationship with a ninety year old WWII pilot, all the while aching to be in his arms.

Ms. Lucy Finn has written a funny and heart tugging tome with just enough magic to charm any reader. Ravine’s inner-dialogues identify her as a modern woman with the age-old worries and fears of most women these days. Gene displays the old-world gallantry found in most men from that bygone era and I’m sure most readers would appreciate a man of his caliber. With just enough drama to spice it up and a taste of passion to finish it nicely, this book should grace any reader’s bookshelf as a keeper. I enjoyed it immensely.
