Prince Leo of the Atwood fairy Kingdom is given an ultimatum by his mother, Queen Beryl. If he wants to take over as ruler of the kingdom, he must prove himself in a final task. Once he finds out it is about a woman, Leo knows the crown is a sure thing, as women have always found him to be irresistible.
Gwen Dubois lives in Big Knob, Indiana, where everyone is friendly and nothing is secret for long. When she finds a rare plant growing in the middle of winter, she contacts Marc Chevalier who lives in Paris, France. With his botanical expertise, Gwen is hoping that they can discover if this plant is a miracle or a hoax.
Emailing back and forth, Gwen and Marc begin to fall for each other’s magnetism and charm. At night when she goes to bed, Gwen has erotic dreams filled with a blond-haired, silver-eyed man who she later finds out is not Marc but Prince Leo. As Gwen and Marc continue to fall in love after meeting, Leo tries to put a stop to it while Big Knob’s resident witch and wizard use all their cunning to prevent the prince from splitting the new couple up. Soon the lovers heat up the bedroom, and the prince finds new ways to get between them, one of which will have deadly consequences.
Casual Hex is as quirky and zany as Ms. Thompson’s other novels; it will make you laugh at the wacky stunts and problems the characters get into. While this is part of a series with some returning characters, it can be read as a standalone. For me, though, this novel was not as great as some of the author’s other books; the story just seemed to jump around a lot. One of my favorite things about this tale is that there is a moral to the story: just because someone is used to getting everything, does not mean love will come just as easily. For the most part, this story had me laughing at all the hijinks, and you will find yourself falling for these endearing characters as well.
