When she was thirteen years old, Christina accompanied her friend to a babysitting job at a mansion. While there, they played in the swimming pool and Christina almost drowned, resulting in her fear of water. Christina never told her parents about the near drowning because she knew she would be belittled.
Her mother, an attorney, had no time for her, but always made time for her sister, reinforcing her insecurities. Her father, an insurance salesman, took her brother hunting in the Ozarks once a year. She put herself through college and found the attention she needed from Paul.
After graduating from college and marrying her college sweetheart Paul, she had a baby girl and found her true calling. While enrolling Katie in swimming classes, she decided to face her own fear and decided to take swimming classes herself. Classes were hard for her, and her last class caused her to hyperventilate. Finally, her mother invited her on a trip to an island, and she thought she was the special one. What actually happens will reinforce her confidence.
Ms. Morris has written a cute story about overcoming fear. Christina’s parents' neglect of her touched a nerve and made me feel for her. Her eventual conquering of this fear shows that you can get past it and actually triumph over it in times of crisis. This story is a nice diversion.
