Henrietta Mason is a doctor in a busy practice in the city. She longs for a family and thought she had found a soul mate in Miles. Miles however is an absentee father with no love for children. It is a godsend when her sister asks her to take care of her children as it comes with a temporary position in a rural practice.
Matthew Cazalet is a widower. All the joy left his life when he wife died in a tragic accident. He has just returned from a disaster relief mission in Pakistan to find that his partner is gone and the temporary doctor is not only not a man, but a beautiful young woman.
Two busy doctors find the time to find love again amidst the small dramas of a rural medical practice. Matthew also rediscovers the small joys he used to have before his wife’s death.
This is a charming romance story. Matthew and Henny are very sympathetic and likable characters. The romance runs more along wistful rather than passionate lines. I did not feel that her romance with Miles was serious enough to make her want to run away; there just was not enough feeling in the description. Matthew, on the other hand, felt entirely too much and it seems the whole village catered to his grief to an enormous degree. The local vet’s family even sent their son out of the country because he was the cause of the doctor’s wife’s accident. The characters are vivid and well developed and the misunderstandings between the two main characters make this a very enjoyable read.
