Cindy Zisk is a twenty-four year old cosmetologist with low self-esteem who attends an
annual sweetheart dance. Once there, she notices a very handsome man and begins to
daydream about him. She is so preoccupied with her inner dialogue, she fails to notice
this same man approaching her from across the dance floor. Not knowing his ulterior
motives for asking her to dance, she accepts his invitation.
Raritan Carswell is a handsome, self-absorbed cad who will use and abuse anyone to
win a cash bet with his friends. He picks the self-conscious Cindy and begins his game
of seduction. Smooth as butter and just as sweet, he feeds her fantasies while
manipulating her into an isolated corner.
Overseeing the dance floor as a disc jockey is Jay Gray, an old acquaintance of Cindy’
s, who sees Raritan and knows of his plans. Frowning directly at her, he tries to signal
to her. She, in turn, misinterprets his actions as jealousy and smugly ignores his
attempts to warn her. The drama played out between these three people is as old as
time and just as real.
Evelyn Starr has captured all the self-conscious angst and internal turmoil that most
young women experience. Her words evoked in me an instant recognition, taking me
back to my own awkward steps towards adulthood. This story is dark, thought provoking
and relentless in its telling, and packs an emotional punch that hits you right from the first
paragraph.
