Officer Allie McCormick, the daughter of the police chief in Stillwater Mississippi, leaves Chicago to move back home for some tranquil peace. The cold case detective bargains with much more when she returns.
Clay Montgomery, stepson of Reverend Baker, did not kill anyone but most of the town believes otherwise. His family refuses to discuss the subject and his girlfriend, Beth, wants more in their relationship. When he finally tells her it is over, her ludicrous remarks may make it worse.
Beth Ann Cole wants Clay to stop thinking of her only for sex and make a commitment. When things turn sour, she strikes back in her way to make him pay.
Grace is Clay’s sister and a good lawyer.
After a complicated divorce, Allie thought moving home and working with the police force in Stillwater she and her six-year-old daughter, Whitney, would find the serenity that a small town offered. She also hoped she might solve the mystery that happened nineteen years ago in Stillwater with the Reverend Lee Barker’s disappearance. Allie feels she owes it to the town to find the real answers and finally bury the past so others can have closure. If the Reverend had simply just disappeared desiring to go somewhere else, Allie is certain if the man was alive he would have contacted at least one of his family members, especially his daughter, Madeline. Clay is too preoccupied when Allie arrives in town. He had heard rumors about the hard case detective and feels she will stop at nothing to uncover the past. When she comes knocking on his door with some flimsy testimony that he has beaten Beth and will kill her next he knows the story is ludicrous. Allie instructs him to get a lawyer then she begins to question within herself the frail testimony from Beth. With each new development Allie exposes, she has a strong feeling that Clay is not the killer and she intends to prove his innocence. As they plunge into unanswered questions they discover much more with each other than they imagined.
Dead Giveaway had this reader glued to each page of this fantastic novel. Every turn of the page was magnificently composed and kept me turning the pages to find what happened to the Reverend. The complex characters spin a tale that rivets and has the reader on the edge of the seat. Intense drama, strong emotions that make a great read and dazzling dialogue that keeps the readers interest. The ending will leave you gasping and I will not say why, you will just have to read the book. Brenda Novak creates a stirring read that keeps the reader practically spellbound. Allie and Clay are great together and the blending with Beth was just the right seasoning to keep this story moving. A thrilling plot, a well-written story and a touch of suspense makes this one extraordinary highly recommended read.
