Stephen Gordin is a medical student anticipating Match Day where he hoped he would be accepted in a radiology program near Charleston, South Carolina. Not getting what he hopes for, the one good thing that comes of that move is he is near his sister Debby.

Debby holds an advanced degree in Pharmacy and works at Hopkins in Baltimore along with her fiancé Nathaniel. When her brother Steve reluctantly starts his internship, she reminds him of a saying their mother always quoted. The arrows of your path will always lead you where you need to go, not where you want to go. That would hold true for her as well.

When Debby is diagnosed with a lesion on her liver, Steve does not worry because her spirits are upbeat. When the test reveals Cholangiocarcinoma which is rare, Steve takes his queues from Debby. Her strength, even in death will challenge him always. His mother’s words and Debby’s spirit will guide his life. Will he be strong when it counts?

Mr. Stephen Gordin has written a touching memoir of his sister’s life. His writing of her indomitable spirit is a testament to her influence and her love for her baby brother. I was drawn into the story of his medical student struggles and Debby’s unerring wisdom in pointing out the positives presented in the fight for what he wanted. In his quest to honor her, he finds himself. I really enjoyed this journey and I hope all who read it learn something in the process.
