Julie is a vet tech with a problem. Her boss is leaving for a month and closing down his office. She has to find a way to supplement her income for an entire month. Her boss suggests she assist a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Esposito, in Waco, Texas with their two poodles because Mr. Esposito can no longer tolerate the dogs’ behavior. The issue: if she fails to train these cute but obnoxious pups, Mr. and Mrs. Esposito’s marriage is over.
Nick is a pilot. He flies to Abilene, Texas to pick up a young lady named Julie. He and the Espositos have a long-standing relationship and the last thing he wants is for their marriage to fail.
Julie travels to Waco, Texas to save a marriage and to help two cute poodles become civilized animals. Falling for Nick is not an option. She has been hurt by the dark and handsome type before and she refuses to go down that road again. But just as she begins to let down her guard, a beautiful woman, Nick’s woman, comes into the picture. Not that she should care. After all, it appears he may be transporting illegal aliens to Texas. On top of that, he seems to be smuggling drugs in. So, though her desire for marriage grows stronger by the hour, she decides to focus on saving the Espositos’ marriage and then getting out of Waco when her month is up.
A near perfect book. If ever there was a story that made me glad that I am a Texan, this is it. The images of Old Mexico are charming and the Texas portrayals are hilariously true. This book is written in a warm, familiar tone that drips with southern magnetism. I enjoyed each and every character no matter what their issues were. How refreshing it is to read a book that took me away from the present moment and transported me into a small town in Texas where Old World meets New World. This is a magnificent book that is witty in all the right places. There are some books that I wish would never end. Dog Nanny is one of them.
