Edna Merker had been a looker in her youth. As a ravishing beauty, she had her pick of eligible men in Newark Tennessee, but chose instead the violent, abusive, and often drunk Keif Merker. Thirty years and seven children later, she found solace in food and bemoaned her tired old countenance.
Benjamin Washington grew up under the watchful eyes of Edna as his nanny, and she witnessed his many triumphs. Now, as a sports columnist, he is quite the dashing and debonair gentleman, quick to give an attractive woman his undivided attention. Coming upon a beautiful stranger at his favorite hang out, he pours on the charm. Unbeknownst to him, his secret wish would be granted.
Edna, having wished for just one more day of her youthful beauty before she died, had been granted her wish by her guardian angel Adam. So knowing her time was limited, she set out to enjoy the last of many experiences, savoring them as never before. Ben, not knowing the young woman he had picked up was his nanny, made her last night alive a memorable one.
J.L. Foster has written a beautiful story of youth wasted and wishes fulfilled. Edna, old and tired of her hard and miserable life, wants to live just once more her gay and carefree youth; while Ben, successful and unfulfilled, yearns for his nanny. It is a surprise to find that they would find what they wished for with each other, and quite poetic. This story shows that you never know what impact you might have made on another person’s life. I greatly enjoyed this respite from the ordinary.
