Donna LaRosa is a teenager living in a strict Italian household. Working weekdays and spending the weekends with violin lessons is a parental order. Donna finds love and defies her parents and elopes.

Frank Romano is an adopted cousin to Donna who has always worshipped her from afar. Never thinking he might have a chance with her even after her marriage then abandonment at the hands of a selfish husband.

Donna finds that one mistake can lead to changing not only her life but affect others also. Tragedy strikes with the death of her younger sister and father; so life as she knows it is gone. Enter Raymond who sweeps her off her feet, marries her and then leaves her to enlist and go to war. With only Violetta and Frank to help her thru her troubles, she finds her way again. Donna and Frank fall in love and have one night together before he ships out and unknowingly leaves her pregnant..

Spanning the turn of the century thru World War I this epic tale encompasses a complete era with Donna and her family and friends. We learn a lot through Donna and her lessons of life as she takes us with her. This includes the loss of innocence, passion, tragedy, heartbreak and love. At this time, life for women was better but they are still second class citizens and treated unfairly in the courts. Historically, we find out a lot about returning soldiers and their traumatic medical problems and their treatments; also we learn what choices women have about pregnancy, abortion, prostitution and even adoption for unwed mothers. This sequel to Fiery Fields is a successful stand alone and is very intense yet written so that we are immediately immersed in this era.
