Forced to find employment during post prohibition, Uptown, as her friends nicknamed
her, works for a dime-a-dance hall called Romanceland. For fifteen cents a minute she
endures the sloppy groping of any reprobate who will pay. Although she allows certain
behavior because it is expected, she draws the line at lewd and down right nasty
actions. Knowing no self respecting man will frequent such a place, she resigns herself
to a life of celibacy. Until one night a handsome, shy, young man asks her to dance.
Father Don, a young priest curious about what he might be missing, investigates the
dance hostesses at Romanceland. Having been raised to enter the priesthood, he is
rather timid when it comes to communicating with women. When he decides he wants to
experience sex with one, he is almost clueless. Uptown, having taken a liking to Don,
decides she will help him with this delicate matter.
Uptown and Don embark on the road to sexual awakening with tender kisses and new
found passions. Uptown finds she is falling in love while Don is falling in lust. To
compound the problem, he is still undecided about his decision to either abandon the
priesthood or rededicate his life to it. In the middle of this dilemma is Uptown, tugging
on his heart-strings. What will he decide?
Ms. F.H. Craig has written a poignant tale of inventive women with few options, taking a
stand in a male dominated world. The characters are funny, endearing, and quite
believable. I cheered on the heroine and empathized with the hero for his naiveté. I
enjoyed this book.
