Finding himself in a bit of a tangle in Mizpa due to his conjuring of a particularly nasty demon, Master Sorcerer Renz is gathering supplies for his escape when he is discovered, accidentally killed, and tossed into the Temple of Time. He wakes in a strange land with a fierce thirst. He has turned into a Blood Taker; a being feared in his homeland and in this new place.
Petra saw what had happened to Renz and knew she had to try and save him if he was still alive. She took two harthers and galloped through the portal before a protection ward could be erected. Almost immediately set upon by a re-animated Renz, the only thing that had saved her from being his first meal was the amulet he had given her in Mizpa. Deeply in love with the almost oblivious sorcerer, she is most concerned with keeping him alive long enough to find a cure for his current condition.
Renz finds his prospects limited with half of his powers useless in this new place and Hunters on his trail. When Petra's gift of foresight offers them a means to rid him of his affliction, they set out on a perilous journey to the Dismal Tower. Formerly a loner for the most part, he must rely on a fiercely determined Petra, the ferekit they have bonded with, a magical haver, and a host of others along the way to help rid him of his Blood Taker tendencies. But as a human, he was dead before he had turned. Would a cure help him or kill him again?
The forth book in the Temple of Time series by Ms. Toombs, this book has adventure and romance mixed with enough magic to make it shine up a bit. I think coming in a little late in the series had me at a slight disadvantage due to some colloquial terminology used by the author, but I eventually caught up. While not a real stand out story for me, it was a pleasant way to pass a few hours time. Were one a follower of this series, however, I am certain they would be quite satisfied with this installment in the series.
