Sandray is a woman with dark exotic looks who is in her thirties. She escapes from her homeland called Reiah where freedom is a rare commodity. Sandray is searching for her father, who has run from Reiah after being convicted for treason. When she arrives at a town called Landon, Sandray meets Esterol. Sandray is highly attracted to Esterol and has to control herself around him. She is hoping he will take her to where her father is hiding, at Illumination.

Esterol is a handsome man with long blond hair. He is someone for hire who does what he pleases. He plays for the stakes that suit him and that includes women. When he discovers Sandray and her father want to re-open an ancient interstellar gateway, he is right there to help. This could open trade between different worlds, providing more business for Esterol. The minute he lays eyes on Sandray his blood starts to boil from the attraction he feels for her.

As Sandray and Esterol start their journey to the land of Illumination a group called Pasters, who are anti-technology, pursue them. The Pasters attempt to kill them on numerous occasions but Sandray and Esterol manage to evade their efforts. Though these two are commitment shy they find themselves falling in love with each other. They have to succeed in their mission and bring a certain crystal her father needs, or the gateway project is doomed.  

Ms. Dickson has written an exciting and fast paced science fiction tale. It has lots of intrigue but also a tender loving side too. Sandray and Esterol have a sexual energy between them that lights up the sky, causing electrical particles to charge the air around them. This is a story you will not want to miss.
