Hua Mu Yun is a former soldier and prisoner of war. He is now working in Shanghai under his uncle. He does as he is told and doesn’t have to think, just do the job.
Leng Ruo Fei is a famous Peking opera singer. Trained as a dan, a female impersonator, he portrays a woman in all his roles. He is also heavily into opium and the local dens.
Mu Yun is on a mission to kill everyone in a local opium den, leaving no witnesses. The problem is with Ruo Fei, he is found in a secluded room, but not giving in to Mu Yun. He is not afraid of death and faces down his would be killer. Mu Yun is notified that this is a famous opera singer with very important connections and cannot be killed. The police would then be after him and it is not worth it, Mu Yun decides to let Ruo Fei live for now. Even his uncle said do not kill him, but make him an offer he cannot refuse and keep him silent and all will be well.
This is not something I would have expected when I started the story. I enjoyed it because this deals with two people from very different backgrounds yet find a common ground, mutual attraction. This was the first time I have read where one is normally straight yet due to circumstances is very attracted with an openly gay actor. It just shows that you never know who or what you might be at any given time until the right person comes along. This is a must read for all M/M genre readers. I loved the interaction between the two involved and found it very moving yet telling.
