Sophie had a loving secret infatuation for Lord Lucas Deverall. Of course he had no idea she was alive until her Uncle Harry shoved a pistol in his face, insisting he recite the wedding vows.
After six years, Lord Lucas Deverall no longer sees a chit or timid girl. Instead he sees a mature woman that stirs deep feelings in his heart. She also holds a large inheritance since her uncle’s death.
Sophie remembers the dangerous look in his gaze. She also remembers the humiliation she endured. Now years later, she wonders has he even changed. Of course since she has an inheritance that could be the reason he has returned. He can force his way into her bed, but he will never have her money. Lucas cannot get over the new Sophie. He has been through a terrible war and suffered consequences but seeing her after many years seems to do something to his morale. She suffered a disgrace because of past events, and feels by Lucas not giving her the benefit of the doubt; he only made matters worse with their travesty of a marriage. He does not understand why she does not believe his sincerity. He is not out for her money. Both are stubborn when it comes to facing their true feelings and unless they push aside the interference of others, they may never have a second chance at love.
His Majesty, Prince of Toads is a delightful romance with interacting dialogue that spins with interesting characters. Sophie’s strong-will stays grounded when matched against Lucas. Suffering within the midst of a war has softened him and his trepidation can be felt through his voice. Delle Jacobs creates a believable page-turner. With some well-rounded secondary characters and tight emotions, this reader found this refreshing tale thoroughly captivating.
