John is a forest ranger out on the mountains looking for a poacher. John has his dog Rusty with him a well trained police dog that he had gotten from a friend and has come to love. John was expecting to have a romantic weekend with his girlfriend Kelly and if John does not find this poacher he may lose that time.

Kelly lives with John but because of their busy career and travel they try to spend as much time as they can together. This weekend is supposed to be a romantic weekend together and Kelly hopes John will get there soon. But when no word comes from John, Kelly contacts the Rangers office.

John has come across a cliff when he accidentally falls. After falling down a few feet John ascertains he is not hurt too badly, and Rusty is acting nervous. Knowing he will have to spend the night again in the mountains, he makes his camp, only to be awakened by a big bear. With the help of Rusty they manage to scare the bear away, and continue tracking the poacher. Getting to the cabin John realizes he has lost his gun, now confronting the poacher he can only do what he is supposed to do. But John is shot and now he may never see Kelly again.

Mr. Grubbe, did a fascinating job of compiling event after event which were full of chaos making you wonder if John was living under Murphy Law. What could go wrong did, and John and Rusty valiantly charged through each one. This story is just right for an entertaining quick read. And this reader thoroughly enjoyed it!
