Mike Sullivan is a New England transplant, taking a break from his life in Santa Cruz, California. Answering an ad for a handyman on a farm perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, he encounters the typical surfer girl who turns out to be anything but typical.

Lucretia “Cree” Cabot inherited the farm from her mother, who committed suicide over her father leaving. Since then, Cree vowed to never let a man have that much control over her heart and her life, believing that loving someone only leads to heart break. When Mike appears on her doorstep with his easy demeanor, she suspects her adopted grandmother is matchmaking again.

Cree and Mike enter an easy friendship that quickly leads towards infatuation, but Cree resists her growing feelings and Mike’s gentle advances. Unaware of Mike’s fame as a comic book creator, Cree believes he is seeking his way as an artist. Mike realizes what he seeks is Cree, but will she allow him behind the wall of fear?

Ms. Keratsis has written a sweet love story full of angst over the past, neglect of self, and the walls of protection we all build to protect our hearts. Cree is a determined young woman, saddled with too much responsibility too soon; while Mike is trying to be that soft place to fall when Cree needs to rest, but of course she resists the offer. Ms Keratsis’ ability to craft and express the emotions of a woman on the edge had me crying and fussing at Cree for being so stubborn. This book will tug at many a reader’s heart. Thanks Ms Keratsis for this journey.
