Jax does not mind being the leader of the vampire clan, Kindred. It has not always been his choice but he makes sure everyone feels they are equals. He just does not trust anyone outside the clan. Yet when he comes across a fallen victim, he feels the need to protect. He is not sure why, but there is something between them.

Running for her life is not what Avery had in mind for herself. She has no one to turn to or to seek solace. One visit to a dark alley changes her whole world. Yet she still feels that her accuser is behind it all. There is a world out there that she never knew existed and now she is part of it. Jax can only do so much to keep her safe.

Ms. Scott has a story that is at times very difficult to follow. I felt for Avery and all she was going through but sometimes it seemed like too much. Jax, on the other hand, was used to difficulties but not how to open up his heart. As much as I did like Avery and Jax, some references made to things outside the story just did not ring true. This was a story that had moments I really liked. The ending saved the story but left a lot of questions. I would definitely read another story with these characters so my questions can be answered.
