Hart, a prince of the Antler Kindred, comes across the body of a seemingly dead woman lying in the forest, the victim of an attack by the Fang Kindred. As he is about to leave he notices her stirring and quickly shifts into his human form in order to take her to his home. When she regains consciousness, he finds out she is a member of the Claw Kindred, complete with all of their attitude.

Katara is the daughter of the leader of the Claw Kindred. Having been ambushed by the Fang Kindred, she is surprised to awaken in a strange room being attended by a member of the Antler Kindred. She quickly learns that she was saved by Hart and is now a prisoner.

Katara and Hart learn to tolerate each other during her confinement and begrudgingly admit a certain attraction growing between them. Their ways, although quite different are none the less honorable. After agreeing to work together to defeat a common enemy, their prejudice turns to something more sexual.

Ms. Ellen Fisher has written an interesting story about cooperation between different species with common characteristics. A Leopard and a Stag seem like an unlikely romantic pair but in their human form it is quite plausible. I became involved from the first page and felt Katara’s initial distrust and her attraction. Hart displays all the beginnings of an honorable hero with his compassionate demeanor and his logical thinking. Together they form a couple with purpose, each complimenting the other’s strengths.
