While Geraldine Pearce sat by her father's deathbed, he gave her the last remaining valuable object of her heritage. It was a magnificent broach, a gold and emerald peacock. It struck awe in all who saw it. Her father asked his dear friend Maharaja of Khadampur to take care of his daughter and placed the broach in his safekeeping until Geraldine's twenty-first birthday. Although she was an Anglo-Indian, the Maharaja treated her like a daughter. Unfortunately, by the time, she reached her birthday her father's friend had passed away and his son Ashock had replaced him.
Duncan MacGavin, a Scottish engineer called to contract for a big project to build The Grand Entertainment Palace. He bore a resemblance to an Anglo-Indian who had stolen from the Ashock Maharaja. His goonda chief apprehended him and beat him severely. When the Maharaja found out, he berated his chief, and had Geraldine administer to the wounded man.
When Dina and Duncan met that day, it was if it were Kismet. The attraction was mutual. They fell in love and on Dina's twenty-second birthday, he asked her to marry him return to Scotland with him. Dina wanted nothing more than to love him and leave however first she needed to retrieve her emerald peacock. It was a matter of honor.
Ms. Hilliger has created a fast-paced adventure throughout the book. All the elements are there, intrigue, romance and suspense. Although there is some problems with dialogue being more modern than the 1940's, this is a good story, and I would still recommend it.
