Carrie Parker is eight years old and lives in Toast, North Carolina with her mother, stepfather and younger sister, Emma. Poor, wearing tattered clothing, fighting constant hunger, and dealing with an emotionless mother and a poor substitute father, Carrie dreams of the loving daddy she lost--the one Emma saw murdered before her very eyes. The abuse Carrie and her sister suffer is constant, and protecting Emma at all costs is her job, even if it means they have to run away from home.

This is her story, told in childlike simplicity and heart rending honesty.

What can I say about Me & Emma by Elizabeth Flock? Stunning, wonderfully written, and emotionally spellbinding all come to mind. I was not sure what to expect after the first few pages because the story is written from the child’s perspective, but it did not take long for me to realize I could not put this book down. From disbelief at the horrors the sisters faced, outrage at a mother who stood by and did nothing, and loathing the drunken stepfather who abused them all, I experienced an emotional gamut. Add to that a surprising twist at the end and I was exhausted as I closed the back cover. A book this emotionally moving is a joy to review because you want to share it with others.

This is my first experience with Ms. Flock, but I am sure it will not be my last. I recommend this book highly and while it may not be the romance you are accustomed to reading, you will fall in love with Carrie Parker. As much as I would love to give away the ending, I will let you read and find out what happens for yourself.
