Mallory Marlowe is a recent widow and she has just been hired by The Good Life as a travel writer, much to the consternation of her college age children. She is looking forward to her first assignment.
Phil Diamond is a writer on his way down in the world. He was once quite well known, now he is disliked and avoided if at all possible. He is rude and obnoxious to all.
Mallory Marlowe is excited to be writing a story about the “Old Florida”, the tourist attractions from before Disney and those that follow in their footsteps. Fellow writer Phil Diamond puts a damper on everyone’s enjoyment from the beginning. No one is really too sad that he is found dead in the tacky Polynesian Princess’s fake waterfall, but somehow Mallory is a suspect. She must use her investigative skills to find out who really killed Phil and meet her deadline.
This is a very well written and interesting mystery. I loved all of her side trips to classic Floridian tourist traps. I would love to check them all out. Mallory’s fellow writers are all pretty quirky. I particularly liked Frieda, the Go Seniors writer. This author writes a very good mystery. She gives plenty of clues, but the twists and turns of the plot make it a tough one to solve. The subplots of Mallory’s budding romance with Wade, and her children’s college woes sucked me into the story even further. This has the potential to be a very good long running series, and I will definitely read as many as Ms. Baxter cares to write.
