Katharine Murphy’s husband becomes ill on a trip out west. Before he dies, he reminds her “every storm has a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end of it.” Devastated, Kate buries Bryan before riding to the nearest town. She hires on as a saloon cook.
Jonathan Cantrell has a small cattle ranch. He is trying to overcome the guilt he feels regarding his wife Mary’s death while raising his two sons by himself. His friend Charlie helps with the ranch but tells him he needs help managing the boys.
Jonathan sees Kate waiting tables at the saloon and is fascinated with her. He offers her a job as his housekeeper and babysitter, which she accepts. When she arrives at Jonathan’s, the house is in total chaos. Within days, Kate has the house and children in order. Soon, Jonathan and Kate feel strongly attracted to each other and after a special night give in to those feelings. The union is explosive. Kate realizes she loves Jonathan, but wonders if he will ever return that love. When he whispers his dead wife’s name in his sleep, she is devastated. Many things happen to cause heartache between them. They are both keeping secrets that could destroy them. Will they find their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?
Ms. Lampman has written the perfect western. You feel like you are living on the western frontier. Everything is described with great intensity. You will feel the cold of the blizzards and the very heated loving that warms them. This story is an emotional read that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. Watching the extent the boys go to in making sure that Kate will not marry anyone but their father will have you laughing.
