Madison Wade has moved to a small Southern town with her adopted son, Ethan. They do not quite fit in yet, but they are trying. When Ethan's friend invites him to a weekend of camping in the mountains, Maddie believes it is safe and nothing can go wrong, though she still worries. When things go horribly wrong, she will stop at nothing to make sure Ethan is safe.

Gabe Wyatt is the sheriff and attracted to Maddie the first time he sees her. Over the next few months, he gets close to her and her son. When her son is implicated in a murder, he knows he must be a lawman first and potential boyfriend second. But there is something wrong with the scenario and he is determined to find the truth.

Maddie and Ethan are trying their best to fit in and make friends. But the townsfolk still see them as outsiders. Gabe tries to help them, especially Ethan, to fit in. After a weekend camping trip ends in murder and Ethan is named as the number one suspect, Maddie takes matters into her own hands. Coming face to face with a killer is not what she expected in this town.

I was not sure about this book as I started reading. But Ms. Crandall delivers a story worth reading a second and third time. The struggles Ethan has faced in his past, allow the reader to connect with him. Maddie, trying her best to be a good mother, touches the heart of the reader as well. I was drawn in slowly by this book and was hooked by the middle. This is one book you do not want to pass up.
