Samantha Rutgers, also known as Sam, is left toiling with life's uncertainties when her husband, John, of twenty-five years, nonchalantly surprises her with the news that their marriage is over. Sam is left to pick up the pieces, starting her life from where it had suddenly crumbled, taking into consideration the lives of her daughter and son.
Frank Reynolds is an advertising man. Recently bereaved due to the loss of his wife to cancer, Frank has a lot in common with Sam. His first encounter with Sam in the foyer of an advertising and marketing company, that Frank could not ignore, was having a life altering impression on him.
Refiguring her life, Sam boldly enrolled in art and marketing classes as a mature student. She then found herself a job, making a start as a receptionist for an advertising and marketing company. Romance had not entered her mind until she saw the tall frame of Frank waiting in the foyer of the company where she worked. His startling blue eyes, silvering hair, tanned and weathered face, all culminated in an instant attraction to Frank but, Sam did well to maintain a professional demeanor.
Maryann Miller has completed a fairly good work. Detailed are the effects divorce can have on all parties concerned, illustrating the inevitable life-changes, disruptions, emotional and personal challenges. There was a lot of strength behind the lead character in Sam, who impressively seemed to sail through the uncertainties with a few minor adversities and without ever really going "over-the-edge." I would have welcomingly loved to read and experience the more emotional and questionable side that the turmoil of a family, torn apart by such a cold and decisive divorce, could possibly entail. All characters are quite easy going including the controversial ones. An easy going and pleasant novel to read.
