Princess Ra' Nara Lumina, next in line to rule Cadeia, decides stowing away on the Ravenstar is the best choice. A small-boned, fragile looking woman, Nara knows marrying her cousin Cleus will only result in her children inheriting the terrible genetic disorder that killed her mother and two older sisters. She simply cannot do that to her offspring.
Captain Ravenstar Bren is Sovereign aboard his ship. His people, the Istrians, are proud, nomadic, and welcomed throughout the Galaxy. Disdaining land-bound people, each ship is lead by its own Sovereign. Their crews take the ship's name when they pledge to the ship. Bren's face is angular and long, with a commanding presence. Although usual regulations encourage Bren to return Nara, he feels enough sympathy to allow her to stay on board until their next stop.
Nara does her best to join the ship's crew and perform whatever chores are set to her, eventually working her way into the ship's garden. Bren has difficulty thinking about anything except Nara. Romance between the two might have taken its natural course, but then Chancellor Kassa of Cadeia shows up to return her.
Ravenstar's Bride is a wonderful story. It has all of the elements of a great plot. The characters are well-written, with the main characters totally rounded out and essential to the plot. Nara and Bren are shown developing a beautiful love that is able to overcome the many difficulties thrown at it. Ms. Colgan is very descriptive in her settings, showing life both on land and on ship. There are a number of secondary characters who add much to the story. Ms. Colgan is adept in adding adventure, love, and intrigue to Ravenstar's Bride. This is the first book of hers that I have read, but it certainly will not be the last. Well done, Ms. Colgan!
