Renee is a teacher in New Orleans. She lives with her aunt in a FEMA trailer since a criminal contractor skipped with their money. A survivor of an abusive childhood, she is wary of relationships.
Alex is a widower with a young daughter. His late wife was unfaithful and generally so hateful he could not mourn when she was killed in a car accident. He devotes his life to his family and his business and has no time or inclination for romance.
In the aftermath of Katrina, Alex’s contracting business is very busy, but he finds time to donate to those who have lost their homes. When a serious accident on a worksite keeps him out of work, he volunteers at his daughter’s school. She is acting out lately, so he is doing his best to help. Her favorite teacher Renee is another incentive to volunteer. The two of them are wary of love, but the attraction between them is just too strong to ignore.
This is a very involving love story with very strong characters and a smooth flowing plot. Renee and Alex are both very charismatic characters and the chemistry between them is very strong. Jasmine is both appealing and intelligent enough to manipulate most of the adults in her vicinity. I really liked both Aunt Lorna and Alex’s mother Margo. The subplot about Margo’s romance with Gregory is almost as involving as Renee and Alex’s story. I enjoyed reading about Alex and Renee’s struggle to overcome their past and the hot love scenes between the two were very well done.
