Sergeant Sam Casey is currently suspended from the police force pending an investigation into the death of a fellow officer. She is pregnant and her husband Jake, a former FBI agent, is now a detective in the same department. Sam also has a trait that sets her apart from her fellow officers. She is psychic and can communicate with the dead, somewhat. In this case a woman named Catherine DeMarco, who was murdered nearly two decades before.

Paul “Pit Bull” Goddard is a washed up police detective. He was a legend on the force until his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. She was leaving him and his grief caused him to climb into a bottle. He was the detective in the DeMarco case.

After nearly twenty years, the spirit of Catherine DeMarco is unable to rest. An innocent man has been convicted of her murder and is scheduled to be executed on New Year’s Day. Sam Casey and Pit Goddard are determined to find out who really killed the young woman, and why.

This is a great mystery story with a paranormal twist. Sam is a very appealing character, suspended from her job, newly married and pregnant, and still getting to know her very taciturn husband. I could have used a little more information about them, but now I have an excuse to buy the previous book. Pit is a classic character, very film noir at times, and I loved Sam’s mother Abby. The subplots of Sam’s suspension hearing and the child abuse case Jake works on only add depth to the story.
