Lydia, Lady Wexin is the widow of a murderer, even though innocent, she is shunned. Her family is away, except for a sister who will not acknowledge her.
Adrian, Lord Cavanley is a well known rake, handsome and wealthy. His father is proud of his ways, but Adrian longs for some real responsibility.
Lydia finds a bit of comfort in Adrian’s arms and, to her dismay, also finds herself pregnant. The recent widow is the focus of all the scandal sheets, and all she wants is to be left alone. Adrian finds that he just can not do that, especially to the mother of his child. Scandal continues to follow the couple as if determined to drive them apart.
I enjoyed this novel for the most part. The characters are well drawn and the author captures the shallow society of the Regency era very well. I never quite understood Lord Crawley’s motivation for what he did to the couple, or why Lydia’s family believed a newly minted scandal sheet over their own daughter. The couple’s rocky love story is engrossing. I felt very sorry for Lydia; through no fault of her own she had to live down her first husband’s murderous reputation and her second’s rakish one. Adrian has good intentions but his follow through is a bit shaky. He does grow up in the end, though.
