As the daughter of the Earl of Marsham, Lady Cordelia Bannister cannot believe her father insists she marry a man she does not love. Her father believes if she marries into the Sinclair family, the businesses of the two families, can unite and be prosperous. Cordelia has second thoughts and will not be coerced into any marriage.

Daniel Sinclair’s family has a vast fortune and by marrying the Earl’s daughter, they can combine the shipping line and merge with his steamship interests. This does not please Daniel in the least, who devises his own scheme of escaping any wedding plans.

Cordelia is shocked when her father insists his finances are not as intact as he would like and she needs to find a husband to help with her spending. She finds the idea repugnant, offensive and medieval. She wishes to marry for love. Her good friend and companion, Sarah, was orphaned when she was younger and Cordelia’s family took her in. She tells Sarah, she will simply use her identity to learn more about Daniel Sinclair. She will meet with Warren Lewis, Daniel’s secretary, and gather the information she needs. Of course she never expects the tables to be turned. Daniel knows never to ignore an unexpected opportunity but a prearranged marriage is out of the question. He has never even met the woman. By masquerading as someone else, he can learn more about Lady Cordelia, never anticipating she had chosen to follow the same scheme. As the two meet, Cordelia feels herself being drawn to Warren (Daniel). Of course her first impression of him is more of that of a pirate. Sarah (Cordelia) is quite irresistible and Daniel finds it hard to forget her. When the two discover the real people behind the masks, it appears the stakes are higher than they imagined. The only question now, is how to act upon it.

Secrets of a Proper Lady is an absolute splendid turn of tables for Cordelia and Daniel. I found it a fun game of mistaken identity with charismatic dialogue and enchanting characters. The challenge is delightful, the heated chemistry an added plus, and the warm, sensual, storytelling of Victoria Alexander pulls the reader into Daniel and Cordelia’s adventure. She depicts an enticing tale that never lets go. The well-rounded secondary characters season the right elements to keep the story flowing consistently. This welcoming read makes the reader feel they have come home to people they know and love.
