Teagan McMurray is the head of the McMurray clan. Teagan was not much more than a child when he assumed responsibility for his siblings and their ranch. He lives for his land and his family, personal needs or wants do not figure into his life.

Jessica Barton is a young widow with three very young daughters. With her husband dead, she has lost her home and her livelihood. Now she may lose her children unless she can get to the one man who has been her best friend for ten years, and does not even know her name.

Jessie heads west from Chicago, knowing she has only one person she can turn to, Teagan McMurray. She only hopes that when he learns the truth, he will still be willing to help her. Teagan is at a loss on how to deal with Jessie and the girls. He does not take to stangers, but it feels right to have them under his roof, if only for a little while. The ranch has always been his first priority, but having Jessie around is changing that considerably. He finds her open and childlike enthusiasm refreshing, but when he learns of her deceit it is like a punch in the gut. He cannot abide lies, and with the ranch in danger from an outlaw gang, he has little time or patience to deal with her. However she and the girls have worked their way into his heart, and he is finding it very hard to erect that wall that once encased his soul.

This is one of the best historical romances I have read in a long time. Jodi Thomas’s Whispering Mountain Series is the perfect blend of rough and tumble cowboys, and women who command their respect and love. Teagan and Jessie are a wonderful example. He is solemn and brooding, but Jessie just brushes off his brusqueness with a smile that melts his heart. Ranch life on Whispering Mountain is described in loving detail. The reader has only to turn a page to find themselves in waste high grass with a gentle breeze, and a majestic view of the mountains that surround the ranch. I am ready to saddle up and take a ride!
