Paul Harrington, the preacher of the quiet town of Cottonwood Bend, lives a good life helping the townsfolk. He has his eye on the Doc's young assistant, however, he feels that because of the past he has been trying to bury since he came to town, he is not good enough for her. The day Doc is buried, Paul's worst fears come true. His past literally rides into town. The group of men he used to ride with, the Texas Rangers.

Belle Marshall loves being Doc's assistant. When he dies, she feels bereft. Doc was her mentor and one of her best friends. At the graveside, as Paul's words wash over her, her thoughts stray. Doc often teased her about her feelings for the preacher, but she always denied them. Besides, she could not get married, there was not a man alive who would respect her need to continue with her work in healing. She just was not the conventional woman.

The unfortunate death of the town's beloved Doc makes the matron's worry about Belle's exposure to men; after all, she was an innocent young woman. One of the more outspoken informs Paul it is time he spoke up for Belle's hand. When he refuses, they form a wedding committee to find her a suitable husband. They enlist the help of one of Paul's former ranger friends to help goad him into marrying Belle.

Ms. Snodgrass writes a colorful tale of the two as they continue to resist marriage. Each for their own reasons. She has made the hero and heroine such wonderful characters you cannot help but turn the pages. I loved this story, it was refreshing and, though a lot of it was playful, the characters shared their deep inner fears and dreams with the reader. Well done.
