Jo is seventeen with a difficult early life. At thirteen, when her parents died, she was sent to live wish a physically and emotionally abusive cousin. After several years with her cousin, Jo felt that she was fat, ugly and that no one would ever love her.
Brian and Matt were college roommates and best friends. They were very popular with the women on campus-both being over 6 foot tall, muscular and handsome. Eventually they discovered that they also loved each other and became lovers.
The boys took Jo in and the three of them lived as roommates, and Brian and Matt as lovers, for the next eight years. During that time, Jo grew tall and statuesque and Brian, an architect and Matt, a lawyer, helped Jo to put her cousin in jail. Now it was time to reach the next level in their lives.
What an amazing story! The McCabes 1: Persuading Jo tells a story of unconditional love. Brian, Jo and Matt's lives are unconventional certainly, but their stories are of people who love each other nonetheless. Ms. Douglas's premise is an interesting one which might have been a mess in less sure hands. The main characters push the plot and they are written so true to life that I felt that I might know them. They are not without fault, which makes them even more real. I was sorry to see this book end. Not only will I read more of Ms. Douglas's work but I hope that this is the first of a series. Brava!
