Cassidy Strumond just wants to get away from this small town. Even her best friend, Jared, cannot keep her from leaving. The blame she puts on herself will not leave her and she can smell ash everywhere she goes in town. She needs to get away and hopefully she will finally feel better. But is she running from something else too?

Jared does not want to lose his best friend but he is just not getting through her heartache. He knows that so much more could be between them if she could only see it. He sees it and she does not, but hopefully they can work it out.

Going off to college and leaving the small town is just what Cassidy thinks she needs. She will miss her Gima most of all but Jared said he would help look after her. The town believes she set her house on fire and so she lives with the idea that she killed her parents, even though it was an accident. Now Jared is starting to see other girls and it hurts her so bad, but what can she say?

Ms. Christner has a fantastic story. The idea that love lasts forever is so beautifully represented in this story. I also liked a lot of the minor characters because they were as central to this story as Cassidy and Jared. The difficulties both Cassidy and Jared have to overcome make the ending so poignant. Love stories can be so varied in how they deal with death. I have to say that this one is the most emotional I have read so far.
