Marietta Winters is well connected but plain and impoverished due to her parents’ and her older brother’s gambling. Now her younger brother is accused of murder and her desperation rises to a new level.
Gabriel Noble is very well known in certain circles. He is a discreet solver of problems and finder of information. His fee is 10,000 pound or three favors of his choosing.
When Marietta Winters’ younger brother Kenny is arrested for a series of murders, she is willing to do anything to save him, which leads her to the door of the illusive Gabriel Noble. She is willing to perform the three favors whatever they may be. This mystery intrigues Gabriel, particularly when the clues lead him to a painful time in the past he would rather keep hidden.
This is a historical romance a little out of the ordinary. The main characters are on the fringes of society and their investigation leads them into the unsavory parts of London. The author describes both sides of society very well. I loved Marietta; I thought she was very brave in her efforts to save her brother and in her relationship with Gabriel, who is determined not to let her get too close. Their love story is very engrossing and the love scenes are wonderfully descriptive. The supporting characters are almost as vividly depicted as the main characters. Kenny is weak and pathetic, but sympathetic. Her elder brother is totally self-centered. I really liked Jeremy Noble and how the servants and less savory characters are described sympathetically. The women of the Club are portrayed beautifully as they are, pretty shells holding nothing but evil. This is a great combination of murder mystery and historical romance and very exciting in both aspects.
