Melisande has always tried to blend in and hates being the center of attention. She has resigned herself to being a spinster after a broken engagement, but she has always been in love with Jasper Renshaw.
Jasper, the Viscount Vale, has been left at the altar twice now. He wants a wife and family to help him forget about the tragedy at Spinner’s Falls. On the surface he is the bright and social man he has always been, but that is only on the surface.
The massacre at Spinner’s Falls haunts the survivors, especially the knowledge that they were betrayed by one of their own. Lord Vale is determined to find out who betrayed them, both to assuage his own guilt, and to avenge the friends and comrades he lost there. He has a duty to his family to marry and sire an heir, but he has lost two fiancées to other men. After the last debacle, Melisande Fleming offers to be his bride. It appears this nondescript woman has depths he has yet to discover.
I really like this series and so far this one is my favorite. Jasper and Melisande are an unlikely couple. He is a handsome rake and man about town; she is a plain homebody with an ornery dog. Unlike most of the men of his time, he is actually a faithful husband, despite his late night wanderings. The continuing mystery of who betrayed the men at Spinner’s Falls is getting more interesting and mysterious after a trip to Scotland. Both characters have more to them than they show on the surface, and once they finally get to know each other they find the love they both dreamt of. The subplot of Melisande’s previous engagement left me with a few questions, but the other, of Mrs. Fitzwilliam’s situation, make me look forward to the next book.
