| TOUCH THE DARK KAREN CHANCE ISBN 0451460936 June 2006 Penguin/Putnam/Roc 375 Hudson Street, NY, NY 10014 Paperback $6.99 173 Pages Paranormal/Vampire Rating: Cassie is a clairvoyant working as a travel agent. She also can talk to ghosts. She is hiding from the Mafia Don who killed her parents. She finally has a seemingly safe life with her roommate Tomas, a former street kid. This all changes when she gets an email of her obituary; she is going to be murdered that night. Cassie’s world is destroyed when the Don’s goons attack her. Tony is not only a Mafia Don, but also an ancient vampire. Cassie turned him in to the Feds when she found out how he was using her. Tomas turns out to be an ancient vampire charged by the Council to protect her. The Council wants her to help them stop a rogue vampire. The magical humans think that she is a rogue mage and want to prevent her from becoming the next Pythia. Every one wants to use Cassie for something. Hopefully she will stay alive long enough to answer her own questions. This is the best vampire novel I have read in a long time. The author has created a vivid world where vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, and the fae exist among the humans. The idea of a vampire as a Mafia Don is so apt, I wonder why I have never seen it before. Portraying vampires as characters out of history was also a nice touch. I loved Cassie’s ghostly friend Billy Joe. I hope that there will be a sequel, the author drew me so far into Cassie’s world that I am reluctant to leave it.
