Johanna Wade’s father is a preacher and has sent for her after years of separations. Joining his wagon train, she is shocked to meet their guide Ryan. Fascinated by the unusual man, she is hesitant when he seems to have another on his mind and a bad reputation to live down.
Ryan is trying to avenge his murdered brother and care for his sister-in-law and her children. Though he admires the strong willed Johanna, he also fights his attraction to her. Unfortunately, there seems to be another vying for her attention.
Leading the missionary party across the mountains, Ryan and Johanna must work together to save the others. However, the cruelty and hardship could be more than the couple can endure.
Wildflowers is a good historical and I enjoy the interaction between Ryan and Johanna, especially how the couple tried to fight their attraction. The sex scene is touching and the remaining intimate but implied scenes were great and moved me with their intensity. Johanna is tough and one can see the stress that the trail takes on her, while she never cuts Ryan any slack. Ryan was a wonderful hero who tries to remain aloof while fighting his attraction to Johanna. The background characters are numerous and keep the plot dramatic and poignant. While some of the characters were slightly extreme in their actions, they do remain consistent throughout the story. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who enjoy a tender love story.
