Josie is the head of her family since her father was murdered and her stepmother
committed suicide. Her family is very successful in business, but in danger because her
brother is half Cheyenne, and her step-uncle is also Native American. One of those
conflicts leads her brother to promise help to two new arrivals to Nebraska.
Nicholas was the son of a wealthy aristocrat and lived his life in dissipation, until his
mother committed treason with her lover and lost everything. His valet managed to get
him out of the country, but he is unfit for the new world and does not know how to
assimilate.
With the help of Josie and her family, Nicholas and Gaston the valet find a new life in
America. Nicholas may even learn how to love if he is willing to take a chance.
This story set in the late 1800’s shows the difficulties in living in the untamed West.
There is a background of prejudice against Native Americans, women, and immigrants
that the main characters must overcome. The subplots involving Josie’s sister, step-
uncle, and Gaston add dimension to the story. Josie and Nicholas are very strong
minded and sympathetic characters who overcome their fears to be together.
