Set in Richmond, Virginia in the 1880s, Emiline Wright wants only one thing, to be free
of the evil man who beats her and physically holds her captive. She wants to go home
to the farm, which is her inheritance. If she ever gets free, she plans to never allow
another man to touch her again. She escapes from Sonny Peterson’s cruel clutches
and on the way, meets Tommy Medlin, the most handsome man in the world. Together,
Em and Tommy work the farm and as things are shaping up, they are unaware that
tough times are ahead.
Tommy mostly keeps to himself, being an introvert and a hard worker. When he comes
to the aid of Emily, sparks ignite in a way that warms the heart. He would like nothing
more than to be with her always, but with so many obstacles, he wonders if they will ever
be together.
I absolutely loved this book because it truly depicts an incredible love story about two
troubled souls who have been deeply hurt and brought together by real love. It is about a
love so strong, it could overcome their troubled pasts and forge a new future for them.
My heart broke when Emily recalls negative events in her life such as her doll with the
pearl necklace that went missing. The author beautifully describes Emily’s emotional
growth during her troubled years as an adolescent.
The day Tommy met Emily and wished he was invisible, so he could stare at her beauty
all day, I sighed. When Tommy came to her defense, my heart leapt with joy. I liked the
way Ms. Shoup gave Tommy’s character many positive traits, his strength, his honesty
and integrity. Ms. Shoup has a flare for writing that draws the reader in until the last
page of the story. I was on the edge of my seat after the first few pages. This was a
book that I couldn’t put down until I found out what was to happen to Emily and Tommy.
She made her characters very believable. She is a gifted writer.
