Rose Golightly is a young country woman feeling her great age of twenty-five as the spinster sister and on the shelf in the marriage market. While traveling to Yorkshire for a family wedding, she encounters someone she never expected and she falls for a man she can never have; he is betrothed to another.

Richard Kerre, Lord Strang and his twin brother, come to confront the man wanting to marry their younger sister. As he arrives he meets Rose and knows she is his other half, his soul mate, and he is set to marry another in just weeks.

Richard and Rose meet under unusual circumstance including the untimely death of her cousins and the mystery surrounding the possible murder. As they investigate to find the culprit, intrigue abounds with a cast of interesting characters and twists and turns to bring our killer to light. Throughout this ordeal Richard is willing to risk scandal to extricate himself from Julia to be married to Rose.

This grips you from page one and you will not want to put it down. I was teased with just a taste of what is to come from this first in a series and cannot wait to see what happens next with Richard and Rose. Ms. Connolly has completely captured the essence and ambiance of the period including some of the religious fanatics back then. It is touched upon that women were born in sin and must suffer for it, forever if their men folk have any say. It was a more enlightened time except for those bullies who hid behind their religious beliefs to dominate those lesser folk around them including their women. To sum this up never underestimate a woman especially when under duress, you will be surprised and cheer along as I did.
