A discreet gentleman of discovery by vocation, Brander Hansen never expects to get married when he fulfills his aim to become a titled man with a bankrupt estate. Now he is running low on funds and since Barons do not work in trade, he is hesitant to continue his vocation.
Regin Kildalh Hansen loves her husband regardless of him being deaf. She finds him more capable then any of the other men with hearing. She also knows he misses being a discreet gentleman and needs the challenge.
When two men are found dead in the same circumstances, Lord Olson, Branders’ alter ego, is approached to solve the murders. Regin convinces him to resume his investigations and get the commission, but there is a catch: she gets to work with him. A simple investigation gets complicated, as everyone involved seems guilty, and the murderer is nowhere near being caught. Then the investigation turns deadly, and a deaf man has to save his wife before it is too late. Will he?
I am absolutely in love with this book. After a long time, I am reading a really, really good romantic mystery with just the right amount of suspense. The setting is in Norway, a first for me, and the hero is deaf, another first for me. The author has written this book flawlessly. The characters leap off the page. They are vibrant, three-dimensional, and are not perfect, i.e. they have insecurities, get angry, unreasonable, and they make mistakes just like the rest of us. How they resolve them and come to terms with themselves is worth reading. The author has fully justified the lead characters, their personalities and flaws, bringing them to life without spoiling the investigation plot. I love Regin–her spunkiness and how she got her revenge. I love Brander–for being a better man because he is deaf. They are one perfect couple. You can actually feel their chemistry on both an emotional and physical level. The suspense will keep you on the edge. I have actually finished this book in one day and cannot wait to get the next in the series. For now, I am going to get the first book, which I have not yet read. A definite keeper!!
