Rating: 4 cups
Dr. Tony Hill is a psychologist at Bradfield Moor Secure Hospital. His patients range from those who are temporarily insane with hope of returning to the outside world to those who are too dangerous for society. Dr. Hill is also a criminal profiler for the Bradfield Police Department.
Carol Jordan is the Detective Chief Inspector with the Bradfield Police Department. She is also Tony Hill’s tenant and friend. Her current investigation has her pushing herself in order to find the answers which are refusing to be found.
An attack at Bradfield Moor has Tony in the hospital with a broken knee. Carol is trying to be supportive, but this case has her confused and frustrated. Who would want to kill Robie Bishop, Bradfield Victoria’s midfield man? What are the motives behind such a cruel and senseless crime? When Robie is admitted to Bradfield Cross with a severe chest infection, blood tests, diagnoses and treatments are not working. Senior House Officer Elinor Blessing begins to wonder if there is not something the doctors are missing. Ricin poisoning is her diagnosis. Muslim fundamentalists are afraid of what this could mean for them. Police are not sure where to look for the answers. Things are only going to get worse.
Val McDermid is a very talented writer. She writes in such a way that the reader is drawn into the story. I felt connected to the individual characters as they each told their story. It took me a chapter or two to really find my pace, but once I got going, I hated to put the book aside. There are many people for the reader to become acquainted with and it can be a bit confusing, but I thought it added depth to the telling of this story. Beneath the Bleeding is one of the most intense mysteries I have read. I would highly recommend adding this one to your bookshelf.
