Desert Breeze Publishing
Science Fiction/Futuristic/Speculative Romance
Rating: 4 Cups
Ariela of Kassouk is a Captain of the Black Sword Guard. She also happens to have mutant ancestry. Mutants are the rulers and believe themselves to be better than humans. Ariela’s grandmother and the king have allowed her to have access to many records in the library that are forbidden to other humans. She knows much more than she should and in many mutant eyes that makes her dangerous.
Lord Starro is the crown prince of the Star Children. He has been raised to believe that he is better than everyone, human and mutant alike. He also believes his kind is destined to rule the planet. His kind have been gifted with incredible mental abilities and technological knowledge from a race long dead.
When the king and queen Ariela and humans and mutants alike adore, is murdered, Ariela knows that as Captain of the Black Sword Guard she will have to gather her guard and their allies together and fight back. When the prince of the Star Children saves her life from a killer arrow by speaking the word “Beloved” in her mind, she thinks she is imagining things. However, while she acknowledges her attraction to him, and eventually her lioness’s trust of the handsome prince, she does not know if she can truly trust him. He seems far too arrogant to her, and that could be dangerous to all those she knows and loves. When Lord Starro is arrested on charges of killing the king and queen, Ariela knows she has to save him and puts a plan into action to do just that. But is saving the prince, who has been horribly tortured, going to be enough? What about the fact that he has been given a drug that is addicting with the first dose? Will he even live? There is a traitor in the midst of the mutants, one who wants to enslave the humans, and addict the mutants to a horrible drug so he can control them. With enemies and secrets all around them, Ariela must discover if Lord Starro can be the hero she needs, or if his arrogance will get them all killed, allowing the enemy to win. Or is there even another path, or possibility? Only time will tell.
Wow! Talk about a real page turner! I absolutely Adored Blue Lioness. Ms. Schartz is an incredible storyteller with a very big imagination. I really enjoyed seeing how Lord Starro grew emotionally and as a person with Ariela’s love and help. He came off as a very shallow, arrogant person in the beginning, and I was not sure I was going to like him very much, but the more I read and saw him change and grow for the better, the more I fell in love with this character. I also loved Ariela’s strength and determination, particularly when it came to saving Lord Starro, and making sure he got the help he needed to survive his addiction to the drug he was given. The world building is so imaginative in this story that it just kept me turning the pages late into the night, because I was desperate to see what happened next and to see if Ariela and Starro were going to get their happy ending. If you love science fiction romance with stellar world building, and a beautiful love story, oh, and sentient big cats then you do not want to miss this one. I for one am going to go out and buy the rest of the books in this series, and I encourage you to do so as well, Ms. Schartz is not to be missed!
