In 16th century Scotland, Duncan Sinclair must return to his ancestral home in the Highlands to take his place as Laird of the Keep. His brother Cainneach was the former laird, but he has abruptly died. The council of elders informs him that he must also marry and produce an heir quickly. Duncan does not like to be told what to do, but he agrees for a tournament to take place, and at this tournament he will pick a bride.
Arbella Kincade has loved Duncan since she was a little girl. Now all grown up, she travels with her uncle to the games, intent on winning his heart. She decides the best way for her to do this is to compete in the tournament herself; to stand out from the rest of the women on offer.
Arbella certainly stands out to Duncan. Enamored with her, they arrange to marry. But Cainneach’s widow, Lyall, has ideas of her own. She too wants to marry Duncan and retain her position in the Keep. Duncan also learns that his brother may have been murdered. He must get to the bottom of this mystery before more innocent victims get hurt.
The growing love between Duncan and Arbella is tender and romantic. This book also held a lot of twists and turns in the hunt for a killer. However, the secondary characters, specifically Lyall, overshadow the main characters at times; I found myself more interested in her story than Duncan’s or Arbella’s. The story is also slightly overlong and could be reduced. Nevertheless, the characters are well-developed and the setting a nice change from Regency romances.
